Got my copy, complete with the author's inscription! Thanks Steve, and congratulations! I'm reading it now - and i'm hooked. The story is flowing off the pages; images, scenes and characters painted in my mind. (I'll get back to you when i've read more ...)

Steve Harris has been a great help to me, especially in identifying some of the soldiers named in Grandpa's diary. I am most pleased to see the results of all Harris's research combined with his remarkable talent for story telling.

- Joseph J. Jones' WWI diary - K Co., 165th. (& HQ ) Jones' entries were nearly as brief as my Grandfather's. Another similarity is how they recorded mail received and sent. Jones was more consistent about documenting the villages. I am looking here for hints about the movements of my Grandfather, though they were in different Battalions (Rouse/2nd Bat., Jones/3rd Bat.).
- Fighting 69th at 150 (theWildGeese.com)- Interesting, two part history series by Kenneth H Powers, regimental historian. This gives the early history of the 69th; pre-civil war, civil war - 23 campaigns (Bull Run thru Appomattox).

Company F / 165th -- Descendents. These descendents of Co. F veterans have made contact:
- Pvt. Eugene Rogers: In April 2005, i was contacted by Bob Gilson, whose ancestor (Pvt. Eugene Rogers) was also in Company F, 165th. He was fatally injured on the same day and in the same way my Grandfather was injured - a single machine gun bullet to the head.
- Richard D. Leahy: In 2003 Gerard Doyle contacted me. His Grandfather was also in the 165th Regiment, Company F! "His name was Richard D. Leahy: (aka "Dick") of the Yorkville section of Manhattan, NYC. Legend has it he was called "Company F's favorite Tenor", and would sing sometimes at gatherings."
- Pvt. John Tyson: July 2004 i was contacted by Tom Tyson "My grandfather was Pvt. John Tyson, and you reference Joe Hourigan's account of F Company on your Web site. I still have a number of my grandfather's effects, including his Purple Heart medal and a diary." Tyson was wounded in the Battle of the Ourcq - see this account of the Ourcq, written by J. Hourigan
- September 2006 i was contacted by SGT Khris White of Alaska. Khris's Great-Grandfather, ____ ____ , who was in F Company, 165th. Khris sent a photo of the company taken at Camp Mills, NY. He also sent photos of the ship which transported the 42nd Rainbow Div to France.
- Pvt. William Walker: October 2006 i was contacted by William Walker Hornung - named after his grandfather. Walker H's mother told him that his Grandfather fought with the 165th in WWI. There was only one William Walker in the Regiment when they shipped out. While not conclusive, there is a fair chance that he is the same Willie Walker often mentioned in the diary. Nat's close friend.

- Sam Drebens - The fighting Jew. This is a fascinating story about a true warrior. WWI is only the final chapter of Drebens' military service, though he was was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, with the Croix de Guerre and the Medaille Militaire. He fought in many other causes in many other wars. For instance, he fought with and then against Poncho Villa. <nr>
